Dr Fadi Sami Karam obtained his PhD in Agricultural Water Management in 1997. Post-Doctoral studies in ‘Eco-Physiology and Drought Management’ and ‘Agro-Meteorological Applications’ were accomplished in 1998 at the University of Trieste, Italy, and the Institut de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) in Avignon, France. In 1998-2008 he served as Head of the Department of Irrigation and Agro-Meteorology at Agriculture Research Institute of Lebanon and Head of the Central Laboratory at the said institute in 2006-2008. He also served as National Coordinator of the ‘Rural Development Project of the Upper Bekaa Valley’ with Italian Cooperation Agency in 2003-2008. In 2006-2008 he was assigned Head of the Agro-Meteorological Component of the EU-Agriculture Development Project - Early Warning Systems for Pests & Diseases’ (EUMED 2003/5715/ADP). He took part as International TCDC Consultant for FAO in "Treated Wastewater Reuse in Agriculture" within TCP/SYR/0167 "Strengthening the Capacity for the reuse of treated wastewater in irrigation" (Syria, 2003) and International Consultant in “Agricultural Water Management” at FAO Regional in Cairo (2008-2009).
In 2009-2011 he was assigned to work for International Research Centre in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) in Aleppo as Regional Coordinator of the ‘Water and Livelihoods Initiative for the Middle East’. During the period from 2012 to 2017 he took part as key staff in development projects in Lebanon, namely Component Leader in ‘Litani River Basin Management Support Program’ with International Resources Group (IRG/Engility) and Agriculture Technical Director in ‘Lebanon Industry Value Chains Development Program’ with Development Alternatives Incorporates (DAI). Currently, he serves as International Consultant for Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Agro-Meteorological & Hydro-Meteorological Systems for its regional program in Central Asia.
Since 1999, he teaches at non-tenure basis courses of Climatology, Agro-Meteorology, On-Farm Water Management and Climate Change at the Faculty of Agronomy of the Lebanese University.
Since 2015, he teaches at non-tenure basis course of Geography and Agro-Meteorology at Saint Joseph University, Taanayel Campus, Lebanon.
During the period of 1998-2012 he led several collaboration projects with the European Commission within the European Research Area (ERA), namely WASAMED, WatNitMED, Flow-Aid and MELIA, as well within the UN Water Decade (2005-2015), Water for Life, Global Water Partnership, EU Horizon 2020 Initiative and EU-WFD Water Framework Directive. Currently, he is the National Coordinator of PRIMA-SUPROMED Project on ‘Sustainable Production in water limited environments of Mediterranean agro-ecosystem’ (SEP 2020 – SEP 2022). He published more than 100 articles in peer scientific journals and symposia proceedings. He was ranked in 2019 to the level of Professor at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the Lebanese University in Beirut.
He is a team member founder of the Arab Water Academy in Dubai in 2008.
